Thomas Dakin
Thomas Dakin – 42%ABV
Botanicals – including juniper, orange peel, grapefruit, red cole (horseradish), coriander, angelica, cubebs, liquorice
Thomas Dakin founded G&J Distillers in 1761 and pioneered the production of quality gin, almost unheard of at the time. Bombay Sapphire and Greenall’s Original London Dry are based on his recipes, but this gin bearing his name is not. This is the work of Master Distiller Joanne Moore, whose team discovered an old pick me-up-recipe for weary 18th century travellers that contained red cole, or horseradish. This is one of the botanicals used and now you know why.
The nose is sweet and distinctive with juniper and orange peel to the fore.
Neat, juniper and horseradish make an unusual and earth mix, with citrus joining with pepper and sweet notes. Very different, and has a lot of character.
The recommended garnish for G&T is orange peel and coriander. And these reflect the almost savoury and citrus base notes. This is a deep, rich and earthy gin that will reward experimenting with in a variety of cocktails. And with its stunning bottle and label it looks superb on the shelf.
