When I first saw the botanicals present in McQueen Super Premium Dry gin, I turned to Mrs. Gin and said, ‘I can’t see these working together.’ When I first tasted it, I turned to Mrs. Gin and said, ‘This is an award winner.’
McQueen gin is produced by Dale and Vicky McQueen at the Trossachs Distillery deep in the heart of Scotland. They started filling their beautiful hand-poured, blue -glazed ceramic bottles with Sweet Citrus, Smokey Chilli, Chocolate Orange and Chocolate Mint Gins. The most recent product is this, their take on a traditional dry gin.
On the nose, juniper is strong with woody background notes.
Neat, there is a surprise. After the aroma, I was not expecting a big hit of lime and grapefruit, but the vanilla smooths any harsh edges away and gives it a creamy citrus background over the juniper. Pepper joins in to provide a long warm finish. This is a seriously good neat gin.
The suggested serve for a G&T is with Fever Tree tonic, garnished with a twist of grapefruit and lime peel. We prefer it with Franklin & Sons or 1721 Tonic Water as these both allowed the flavours evident when tasted neat to come to the fore and produce a wonderfully balanced, spicy, citrus flavoured and smooth G&T. A Martini was, as expected, excellent and we are sure McQueen Gin would be a great base for many a cocktail recipe.
A very rare accolade, but McQueen Super premium Gin has made it on to the top shelf of Theginman’s collection. A keeper.
