Malfy Originale Gin
Malfy Originale Gin – 41%ABV
Botanicals: Italian juniper, coriander, cassia, orris, angelica root, orange, grapefruit and lemon peel
Garnish – citrus peel
Flavour profile – juniper
Italy, along with more obvious claimants, is said to have originated the production of gin as far back as 1050 when monks distilled a spirit and mixed in juniper on the Amalfi Coast; hence the name Malfy.
The Torino Distillati was established in 1906 and is located just outside Torino, within view of the Monviso mountain which provides the inspiration for Originale gin. Wild juniper grows on the slopes; the blue base blue of the bottle reflects the colour of the mountain lakes; and spring water from the mountain dilutes the gin to bottling strength.
As opposed to other offerings from Malfy, Originale is a more classic gin. On the nose there is an abundance of juniper with coriander and citrus notes.
Neat, juniper is again to the fore, followed closely by spicy coriander, grapefruit and lemon notes and a touch of aniseed.
Mix with tonic, not too much, and garnish with a slice of lime and lashings of ice to make a G&T that will spirit you to the Amalfi coast. A martini with the merest splash of vermouth was deemed excellent by all who were lucky enough to be offered one, as was the Italian 75 we conjured up (one part Originale, two parts Prosecco, a splash of Limoncello and garnish with a lemon twist).
We were very taken with Malfy Originale; presented in a beautiful bottle, this is a classic juniper-led gin, crisp and dry and at a price that puts many more expensive offerings to shame. We can’t wait to try more from The Torino Distillati.
