Makar Glasgow Gin
Makar Gin :43%ABV
Botanicals: juniper, coriander, lemon peel, cassia bark, angelica, black pepper, rosemary, liquorice
Flavour profile: juniper
Garnish: mild green chilli
Makar Glasgow Gin is produced in the city’s first new distillery in over 100 years. The very attractive bottle is topped by a screw top which pronounces that contained within is ‘superior juniper-led dry gin’; no arguments here. Maker is produced in the distillery’s own copper still, named ‘Annie’, and unlike many new small batch gins has not held back on the juniper; and then added more.
On the nose there is piney and earthy juniper, and perfume from the rosemary.
Neat there is juniper aplenty with rosemary then coriander and a hint of licorice following with a long, warm and smooth finish. This is a big, bold gin, the taste feels like it fills the mouth; we were more than happy to drink this on the rocks.
Add tonic and juniper leads with rosemary, a touch of licorice and warm pepper. The recommended garnish is mild green chilli. I wonder if this is a touch gimmicky, maybe to help the brand stand out? There is no denying it makes an interesting alternative though. This is one of the very few gins with which I would use lemon as a garnish as it not overly citrusy.
As the flavours are so bold and full this makes a great martini; so good I had to have another, just to make sure you understand…
The market segment Makar is competing in is crowded, with new products announced regularly. It seems that to stand out you need a quirky taste, a quirky bottle or a huge marketing budget. Where does this leave Makar? I suspect that they have a large and loyal following in Glasgow but will they establish themselves further afield? I hope so as this gin deserves a wider audience. Mrs. Gin has forbidden me from using this word but I am going to anyway; this is a ‘ginny’ gin; bold and full, we wish it much success.
