Death’s Door
Death’s Door – 47%ABV
Botanicals – juniper, coriander, fennel
Garnish – slice of fennel and apple
Made in Wisconsin, Death’s Door is a London dry gin named after the passage of water that separates Door County and Washington Island, where it is distilled.
Originating in 2005, Death’s Door is one of the first ‘new wave’ gins utilising locally sourced ingredients. Wheat and juniper are grown on the island, with coriander and fennel coming from mainland Michigan.
Tasted neat it has a bright and clean juniper hit with coriander and fennel sliding in to provide a citrus and anise finish, with a hint of sweetness.
This is a good, dry and uncomplicated gin that makes a mean Negroni or Martini. It needs a quality tonic, and we paired it with Fentiman’s 19:05 Herbal Tonic Water garnished with cucumber, mint and lemongrass. The relative complexity of the tonic worked well with the clean simplicity of the gin, adding a herbal, slightly bitter sweet finish. Combined with the aromas from the garnishes, this makes a perfect summer tipple, to be sipped on the terrace watching the sun set.
