Conker
Conker Dorset Dry Gin – 40%ABV
Botanicals: juniper, elderberry, coriander, angelica, oris, cassia, Seville orange peel, lime peel, elderberries, marsh samphire, gorse flowers
Garnish – lime zest
Another recently formed small batch producer, Conker is Dorset’s first gin distillery. British wheat spirit, local New Forest spring water and botanicals as local as they can get is the recipe here. The founder, Rupert Holloway, started with a clean canvas and built the taste up from scratch. After much experimentation recipe 38 (out of 45) was selected and the journey began.
On the nose this is clean and bright, lead by juniper and citrus.
Neat, Conker is juniper-led with sweet notes following, but not cloyingly so, it’s fresh and smooth with a spicy finish.
The well spread taste means that it mixes well; a dry Vermouth hits the spot, as does a good tonic and a twist of lime. Conker shows its class when mixed and the taste spreads and soars. In fact, class is the word that sums up the whole enterprise, from the ethos right through to that gorgeous bottle.
