Gin Tasting in Hampshire
It’s not just in the major cities that the gin message is being received and understood. In the village of Hartley Wintney, in the depths of bucolic Hampshire, the local off licence Auriol Wines has picked up the metaphorical gin baton and run with it. They stock over 50 gins’, have a few artisan bottles open on the counter for sampling and in May ran a tasting in the local village hall where over 50 people turned up. The gins’ on sample were as local as they could get; Twisted nose from Winchester, Brilliant Gin from Chichester, Silverback Mountain Strength from Four Marks Hampshire, Conker from Dorset, Sacred from London and Silent Pool from Surrey.
Claire and Andy Daniels from Gorilla Spirits attended and Andy gave a talk explaining the ethos and history of the company, which was very well received.
The gin was served with bottled water, three different tonics and a selection of garnishes – lime, lemon, orange, grapefruit, cucumber, mint and rosemary. The tonics were the ubiquitous Fever Tree and Fever Tree light plus Peter Spanton’s No.9 Cardamon Tonic. I had already reviewed the gins (Gin Reviews section) but it was great to see folk mixing, experimenting, sipping and quaffing gins they would not normally have tried. In fact the evening was such a success a follow up tasting has been arranged for June in which 6 artisan gins from the rest of the World will be sampled. Can’t wait.
